10 artists set out in search of a new collective ritual and pay tribute to the universal and ancestral figure of dance, the circle dance.
“The round dance is an ancient figure which is surprisingly found in all civilisations and on all the continents. It appears in children’s play, in a folkloric setting, a sacred or incantation space, but it always appears from the simple principle of being circular.
It echoes the shape and trajectory of celestial bodies as well as the idea of seasons’ timely cycles. Its universality perhaps also comes from the physical properties of a circle. It gives the “dancers of the round” the possibility of commun(icat)ing directly with each other, through a continuity of gaze and/or physician contact, by holding hands for example. Each spontaneously adopts this familiar and cyclical shape and so moves to a shared rhythm. The intoxicating repetition can go so far as triggering a trans-like state and collective acrobatics that is more or less visible.
I want to create a benevolent homage to this dance, a curious and amusing one, as it is simultaneously frugal and engaging, easily accessible to all. By applying the fundamentals of this archaic ritual, we will try to rediscover the very essence of sharing and connection and we will play with new physical and musical energies (techno, house, percussions, trance...). Also displacing and perhaps renewing codes, We will seize this opportunity to rediscover, in a fun way, a timeless popular form. The emergence of this performance in a heritage site or one diverted from its usual urban context, at a time conducive to collective celebration, will invite the public to come and spontaneously experience this way of moving together. And will momentarily break down the barrier between seasoned dancer and casual dancer”
